JORDAN CUNLIFFE - EMBROIDERY ARTIST

Jordan Cunliffe is an artist who ‘explores data visualisation through stitch’. What I didn’t quite understand before our session was just how much data Jordan collects to then translate into her embroidery pieces.

I think my favourite piece she showed me was created from the data of every time she fed her daughter throughout the first year of her life.
Every single feed is plotted onto the piece, from those constant newborn feeds through to the gradual winding down as her daughter needed less.
Another piece I loved was her Grandads sweater, when he passed away in 2019 she kept one of his sweaters as a reminder of him. Jordan made one diagonal red stitch for every day of his life and then added an opposite diagonal pink stitch for each day of her own life to show how they intersected.
I find the way Jordan expresses the data she collects into something so personal and visual absolutely fascinating and see how something as seemingly ordinary as a daily routine can become such a meaningful record of a life.
