Amy & Molly

After putting a call out on Instagram asking if any mums would like to take part in my project, Amy messaged me saying she had an almost one week old baby and that she would love to be a part of this new series. We arranged for me to come over in a couple of days time and take their picture. I was feeling a bit nervous - not to take Amy’s picture but because this was the start of the project I had been thinking about for a while and actually putting those steps into place to make it happen.

I was greeted at the door by Amy and her one week old baby Molly. When you’re in the throws of the early days with a baby, life can feel so chaotic - midwives visiting, trying to get the baby to latch, checking the clock and working out when they last fed, time becomes so illusive and you end up sleeping in until mid morning when you used to wake up at 6. But there is something so calming in a house with a newborn and Amy’s was no different. The quietness and serenity I felt in the house when Amy opened the door took me right back to when I had my second baby last year and his older brother was at nursery…just peace and harmony (when they are asleep!)

I asked Amy about the birth and she said it was ‘actually ok, she came really quick which I daren’t tell too many people!’ I told her she should tell anyone and everyone as we all need to hear more positive birth stories!

I took some pictures of Amy and Molly in the bedroom which had a beautiful floral wallpaper and I really felt like Amy had a renaissance look about her - this serene expression with radiant complexion, which matched the surroundings. She looked into the camera and looked so confident and content. Molly started fussing and I captured a shot of Amy mid shush, I love this picture as I think it is so familiar to all mothers, the rock the shush before you know they’re going to erupt. We broke off briefly for Amy to feed Molly which I left the room for as she’s still getting the hang of it and then continued for a few more frames before I left not wanting to out stay my welcome.

I love these portraits of Amy and Molly, I think there’s something so tender about them and I know Amy will look back on these in a few years with such fondness. Thank you to Amy and Molly for taking part and being my first subjects for this project
